Celebrating Daniel Goodwin: Committee Member of the Year

Daniel is Director of Government Relations at Suncor and his role includes managing both federal government relations and a dynamic team focused on eastern Canadian interests. Over the years, Daniel has contributed to shaping energy policy in Canada. He was recently recognized as the Canadian Fuels Association’s Committee Member of the Year, and it’s no surprise given the profound impact of his contribution as a member of CFA’s Strategic Planning Group (SPG).

When asked about his motivation for joining CFA’s SPG four years ago, Daniel reflects, “When my role shifted to include overseeing the eastern Canadian team at Suncor. I quickly saw the value and high caliber of work at CFA. The quality of work combined with their approach, and the dedication of the people drew me in.”

Daniel’s contributions to the SPG are appreciated by CFA. His involvement in several critical initiatives, including the consumer awareness campaign – Fuel Forward, and the nuanced realm of Canadian fuels regulation was instrumental. He not only helped the association and its members navigate the complexities of low carbon fuels incentives but also tackled spontaneous issues like railway strikes and budget recommendations.

“Daniel’s insight on climate policies, his collaborative nature and his ability to connect with key stakeholders have been invaluable,” says Bob Larocque, President & CEO of CFA who goes on to commend him for his effective recommendations on Clean Fuels Regulations (CFR) and his role in broadening government relations initiatives.

Despite the accolades, Daniel acknowledges challenges. “Communicating the significance of the industry’s role in emissions reduction and its continued relevance amidst policy complexity is an ongoing effort,” he says. “It is however crucial to help both the government and the public understand the industry’s commitment to reducing emissions and its long-term importance.” He adds that being part of a collaborative efforts to address regulatory challenges has been immensely rewarding.

Balancing committee work with his primary responsibilities is no small feat and Daniel emphasizes the importance of focusing on critical issues and leveraging one’s expertise. “Understanding where to direct your energy and how to add value is key,” he advises.

For those aspiring to follow in his footsteps, Goodwin offers straightforward advice: “Volunteer for opportunities, come prepared, and listen as much if not more than you speak. Always be open-minded and willing to learn.” One of his favorite quotes, “If you ever want to persuade, you have to be willing or open to be persuaded yourself,” encapsulates his approach to effective communication and collaboration.

Looking forward, Daniel aims to continue contributing to CFA’s mission as a member of the SPG and help advance “our sector’s priorities”. His commitment, combined with his business acumen and collaborative approach, truly sets him apart as a leader in the industry and CFA is lucky to benefit from his knowledge and dedication.
