CFA SPOTLIGHT: Celebrating Bill Simpkins – A Leader in Canada’s Fuels Industry

The recipient of The Françoise Landry CFA Achievement Award is a long-time CFA employee whom, through their knowledge and experience, but also through their ability to collaborate and partner with others, made great contributions to the association and our members throughout the course of their time with the association. The award was renamed in memory of Françoise Landry, a cherished member of the CFA family who passed away in 2023 after battling cancer.

In the dynamic world of Canada’s fuels industry, one standout figure stands tall: Bill Simpkins. Recently honored with the esteemed 2024 Françoise Landry CFA Achievement Award, Bill’s 25-year career at the Canadian Fuels Association (CFA) showcases his resilience, innovation, and unwavering commitment to the sector’s advancement. He was selected to receive the 2024 Françoise Landry CFA Achievement Award because of his exceptional leadership and contributions to the fuels sector.

Bill Simpkins, a distinguished member of the CFA team and a close friend of the late Françoise Landry, began his career with the CFA in 1999 when he assumed the role of Vice President of Public Affairs. He is celebrated for enhancing industry-wide communication through initiatives such as CFA’s “Fuel for Thought” series and Perspectives, which served as crucial communication tools before a time when social media existed. His efforts expanded CFA’s membership to include important industry players like Irving Oil, North Atlantic, and Braya, underscoring the association’s value.

Recognized for his impactful work, Bill received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee 50th Anniversary Medal for advancing informed debate and public policy in the energy sector. His involvement in organizations like the Atlantic Used Oil Association, Nova Scotia Environmental Round Table, and the Atlantic PIRI Group highlights his commitment to environmental stewardship and collaborative industry efforts.

Reflecting on the evolution of the fuels sector, Bill acknowledges its adaptation from traditional petroleum products to diverse fuels such as renewable natural gas, renewable diesel and other biofuels. “Embracing challenges with resilience, innovation, and collaboration is key to forging a sustainable future amid advancements in electric vehicles and hydrogen technology.” says Bill.

Bill goes on to state that “Effective communication and advocacy are essential for industry competitiveness and navigating regulatory complexities. The CFA’s professionalism in defending industry interests and fostering stakeholder trust is commendable.”

“Bill’s wealth of knowledge and experience has been a great asset to the Canadian Fuels community, fostering lifelong friendships among many of those with whom he has worked, says Bob Larocque, President and CEO of the Candian Fuels Association. “His keen initiative and engaging leadership style, contributions, and unwavering dedication serve as inspirations for colleagues, mentors, and future industry leaders alike and make him a most deserving recipient of the CFA Achievement Award.”

Looking forward, Bill envisions an innovative future for the fuels industry, particularly in adapting to emerging technologies like hydrogen. As he accepts the Françoise Landry CFA Achievement Award, Bill expresses gratitude for the opportunities and relationships cultivated throughout his career, reaffirming his steadfast commitment to advancing the industry.
