Fuels for the Future: 2025 Innovation Forum
The 2025 CFA Innovation Forum, hosted in collaboration with CRIN and ERA, brings together experts from industry, government, and other organizations to showcase technologies and processes that produce lower-carbon fuels, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen health and safety practices. Launched in 2024, the Forum provides a platform to collaborate, share knowledge, and spark ideas that help advance the fuels sector and accelerate the development of the fuels of the future.
Agenda
The Innovation Forum will feature a full day of presentations and discussions highlighting innovations across Canada’s fuels sector.
Session 1: Innovation in feedstocks for low carbon fuels
For low carbon fuels to scale to the level needed to meet climate targets, many different processes and feedstocks will be required including agricultural and forestry residues, captured CO2, clean electricity and hydrogen.
Speakers: Patrick Bergerman, Federated Co‑operatives Limited, Lillian Zaremba, Metro-Vancouver, Anton Alvarez-Majmutov, CanmetENERGY Devon, Martin Tyrawskyj , National Research Council
Session 2: Improved Monitoring and Detection
Drone technologies, robots, and sensors can be used to improve monitoring, detection and ultimately reduce the impacts of methane and air contaminants. These tools can also help reduce wildlife incidents.
Speakers: Monica Sippola, Sensirion, Reza Tavakoli, Avestec, Taryn Humphreys, Qube Technologies
Panel Discussion
An expert panel discussion around the gaps and opportunities in innovation funding outlining solutions to improve industry performance.
Speakers: Iftikhar Huq, Emissions Reduction Alberta, Scott Volks, CRIN/PTAC, Michelle Belisle, Imperial Oil, Patrick Bergerman, Federated Co-operatives Limited
Moderator: Joe Harriman, CFA
Session 4: AI Interactive
Speakers: Danielle Gifford, PwC, Melanie Popp, PwC, Keri Lee, BlueMarvel AI, Kirsten Hansen, Ultimarii
Session 5: Reducing emissions along the lifecycle supply chain
Projects that reduce GHG emissions along the lifecycle of fuel production are critical to enabling compliance and have ancillary benefits. This includes incorporating lower CI hydrogen and carbon capture.
Speakers: Akshay Thaker, Mantel Capture, Chetan Deep Singh, Ekona, Natasha Kostenuk, Ayrton Energy
