Environmental Commitment

When it comes to protecting communities, people and the environment, our industry is working hard to get better every year. But what does that really mean? Let’s take a look at what’s being done.

Innovation and Investment in Environmental Performance

Since 2000, our members have invested over $15 billion to improve the environmental performance of fuels and fuel refineries. We’ve reduced our refinery greenhouse gas emissions, improved our energy efficiency and reduced our water usage.

Air

We’re all breathing the same air and keeping it clean is a priority for us.

Water

Our members are continually looking for ways to use less water, and to improve the quality of the water they return to the ecosystem.

Land

Our members take full responsibility for restoring and remediating the land to provincial standards.

GHGs

We know we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It’s one of our most complex, but important challenges.

Flaring 101

That flame you see burning at the top of a refinery’s pipe stack is an important, safe and regulated part of the refining process.

Used Oil

Canadians consume several hundred millions of litres of motor oil every year, and it all has to be disposed of responsibly.
