Top blog: Hurricane Harvey

When Hurricane Harvey slammed into the Texas coast at the end of August, it caused horrendous damage. While the impact on Canada was limited, the transportation fuel market was directly affected by refineries shutting down in the southern United States. We explained why that happened in the top-read blog post of 2017.

Blog #2: Shell’s Scotford Refinery

In January, we wrote about Shell’s Scotford Refinery in Alberta, also home to the Quest carbon capture project. The month before, Shell reached a milestone with its super-efficient upgraded hydrocracker: capacity increased by 20 per cent, or 14,000 barrels per day, soon after the project was completed.

Blog #3: Parkland Fuel Corp.

Parkland Fuel Corporation knows how to drive smarter. As Canada’s largest independent transportation fuels supplier, the company took on its own fuel efficiency challenge with smart idling and route optimization.

Blog #4: Flaring 101

Many people wonder what’s up with the flaring at the top of a refinery stack. In a June post, we explained why flaring is an important, safe and regulated part of the refining process.

Blog #5: The Calculator

CAA’s gasoline use calculator really caught some attention in this post. All you need to do is punch in your province and what kind of car you drive, and presto! Your cost of ownership is calculated, helping you make transportation choices.

Thanks for reading! More to come, in 2018.
